What is Sculptra®?

As we age, we naturally lose volume throughout the face. Bone is resorbed in the cheeks and around the mouth. Fat and collagen are lost in the skin. This leads to hollowing of the upper face and laxity in the lower face. This is where Sculptra® plays a role to help replace that lost volume.

Sculptra® is an FDA approved dissolvable material known as poly-L-lactic acid. It is used in dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants. In fact, a natural form of poly-L-lactic acid is produced by our muscles when we exercise.

Sculptra® works by activating your body’s natural production of collagen. This has several benefits:

  • Collagen is produced naturally by your own body
  • This natural collagen production means longer lasting effects, up to 3 years! This outlasts most dermal fillers
  • The effects are more gradual as the body takes time to work its magic and produce collagen. As your volume improves, your face will become more youthful without your friends and family asking if you’ve had work done.

At Spyglass Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ryan Schuering offers Sculptra® Aesthetic, which allows for fuller and longer-lasting volume in the cheeks. Dr. Schuering had the pleasure to train under the world-renowned Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera, one of the leading Sculptra injectors.

What are the Benefits of Sculptra?

With many choices available today for facial fillers, patients often ask what sets Sculptra apart from the others. Some of the specific benefits of Sculptra filler injections that may influence your decision when selecting the right filler for you include:

  • Results often last longer than other fillers (up to three years or longer)
  • Stimulates collagen production for natural-looking results that continue to improve over time
  • FDA approved and considered safe and effective for most patients
  • Preliminary results are visible instantly
  • Can be used in the face and also in certain areas of the body, like the hips or buttocks

who is an ideal candidate for Sculptra?

Sculptra is great for patients who want to add volume to their cheeks without surgery. Some candidates may have naturally hollow cheeks, whereas other patients experience age-related volume loss. Sculptra can also help to treat shallow to deep facial lines and wrinkles, including the nasolabial folds, chin wrinkles, and marionette lines. Since Sculptra's formula helps to boost the body's natural production of collagen in the skin, many Sculptra patients will notice a visible improvement in the appearance and overall health of their skin in the areas surrounding treatment.

What should I expect?

After your consultation to determine your personal treatment plan, you will receive your Sculptra injections in one of our procedure rooms. The injector can use a local anesthetic or numbing cream before cleaning and marking the injection sites. As soon as you are prepared, the filler is injected into the deeper skin layers in the chosen areas. For longer-lasting results, Dr. Schuering recommends a series of three to four Sculptra treatments, each scheduled at Spyglass Dermatology, that are spaced about three weeks apart.

Sculptra FAQS

How much does Sculptra cost?
Sculptra injections can range in price depending on how much you need to achieve your goals. Some patients may also need several treatments for the optimal outcome. During your initial consultation, your injector will ask about your concerns and develop a treatment plan with cost estimates.

How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator. It can help to rejuvenate the skin’s inner structure and volume as more collagen is formed. The increased collagen can effectively fill out lines and wrinkles.

Are Sculptra injections safe?
Sculptra is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and has a long history of safety worldwide since the late 1990s. Though side effects are rare, they can include slight pain, bruising, swelling, and/or redness. Occasionally, a bump may develop if pressure is applied to the treated area. Call our office if you have any questions or concerns about side effects or symptoms that do not clear up within the expected time frame.
