What Are Dermal Fillers?
As we age, structures in the face mature as well. Volume loss is the major culprit in these changes. The fat in our face, the muscles, even the bones lose volume as time marches on. The tissues of the face also lose elasticity. This can result in sagging, wrinkling, and contour changes. Contrary to popular belief, gravity is not thought to be a major contributor to this process. However, it can make the appearance of these changes worse. Lifestyle choices like smoking and weight loss can contribute to this process as well. Thankfully, dermal fillers are one of the tools we can use to counteract the effects of this process. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Schuering at Spyglass Dermatology in Stuart, FL, to discuss which dermal fillers may be right for you.
Am I an Ideal candidate for Dermal Fillers?
Our selection of dermal fillers can work wonders for patients of virtually any age or skin type. We usually recommend this treatment for patients with:
- Sagging skin, especially around the cheeks and jowls
- Hollowing around the eyes
- Thinning of the lips & wrinkles around the mouth (rhytides)
- More prominent nasolabial folds, jowls & marionette lines
- An increased presence of wrinkles overall
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers are a soft, gel-like substance that can be injected underneath the skin to provide rejuvenation by addressing that volume loss and structural changes that have occurred. The active ingredients may vary depending on the product line. However, the mechanism is the same: to provide and replenish volume loss to target areas. Dermal fillers can be directed to specific areas of need to address volume loss, such as in the cheeks, tear troughs, lips, around the mouth, and more.
Dermal Filler FAQ
What are dermal fillers made of?
One of the most common active ingredients in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that plays an important role in maintaining hydration and volume. Other active ingredients include calcium hydroxyapatite and Poly-L-lactic acid. Each type of filler has its own advantages depending on the target tissue and the desired timeline.
How long do the results of dermal fillers last?
The duration of these fillers depends on their composition and the metabolism of the individual. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are gradually absorbed over time. They typically last for about 6 – 12 months. Calcium hydroxylapatite-based fillers have an extended longevity of 12 – 18 months. Poly-L-lactic acid fillers take 4 – 6 weeks for collagen production, with effects that can last 2 – 5 years.
What are the benefits of dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers offer a wide number of benefits for patients with various needs. We commonly use them to restore volume loss, enhance shallow contours, smooth skin texture, soften facial creases, decrease the appearance of wrinkles, and provide a more youthful appearance.
